The ZHAW plays an active role in shaping sustainable development – through practice-oriented teaching, applied research and its own operations. As a university of applied sciences, we bridge knowledge and implementation, developing solutions that make a difference in everyday life.
This report shows where we stand today. It highlights the progress we have made while also openly acknowledging where we have yet to achieve our objectives. After all, sustainable development is not the result of individual measures alone. Instead, it emerges through continuous learning and collective action.
Regula Jöhl
President of the ZHAW
“We develop solutions that create impact – in everyday university life and in society at large.”
Our strength lies in bringing together the worlds of practice and science – particularly in addressing the challenges of sustainable transformation. Through living labs, projects and partnerships, we develop and promote practical solutions in areas including mobility, energy and resource use. Students, staff and partner institutions contribute their expertise, test innovative approaches and help to refine effective solutions while supporting their transfer into society.

Dean of the School of Life Sciences and Facility Management and Head of ZHAW Sustainable Development
“The legacy we will leave is being shaped today: through responsibility, ideas and collective commitment.”
Sustainability at the ZHAW is based on sound data and shared responsibility. Our carbon footprint and other key indicators show where progress is being made and where competing objectives must be carefully balanced. They identify areas where concrete action is needed and provide guidance for the next steps across all levels.
In this way, we combine transparency, implementation and collaboration to advance sustainable development that has an impact that extends beyond the ZHAW itself.
