Our culture – trusting, respectful and inspiring

Diversity is a defining feature of everyday life at the ZHAW – and at the same time places demands on us to treat one another with respect. To ensure that everyone feels safe and valued, the ZHAW has defined clear rules: the Code of Conduct for the Protection of Personal Integrity sets out boundaries, promotes consistent action in the event of breaches, and fosters an open culture of conflict resolution supported by easily accessible support.

Sustainable Development Goals

10 Reduced inequalities 16 Peace, justice and strong institutions

At the ZHAW, people from a wide range of backgrounds, experiences, life circumstances and views come together. This diversity not only enriches us as individuals, but also makes the ZHAW a more innovative and inclusive organisation.

At the same time, one principle is fundamental: only when everyone feels safe and comfortable can an inspiring, trusting and supportive learning and working environment flourish. This requires respecting boundaries, taking action when breaches occur and supporting one another. The ZHAW Code of Conduct plays a central role in achieving this objective: as a responsible institution, it is our duty to protect the individuality, dignity and integrity of our staff and students. The ZHAW maintains a zero-tolerance policy towards inappropriate behaviour.

“For those on the receiving end of inappropriate behaviour, it is often extremely helpful to be able to discuss their experiences in confidence so that feelings of uncertainty and powerlessness do not become overwhelming. We help individuals assess what has happened and provide information about possible next steps and available options.”

If conflict occurs, it is important to address it early on and to find constructive solutions. The ZHAW’s broad range of counselling services is available to all staff and students to help resolve conflicts, counteract inappropriate behaviour and help establish boundaries at an early stage.

“The ZHAW stands for respect, trust and a culture of mutual appreciation. Together, we share responsibility for creating a learning and working environment in which personal integrity is protected, boundaries are respected and conflicts are addressed early. We encourage everyone to be attentive, to stand up for themselves and others, and to seek support. We view differing opinions as an asset – underpinned by a culture of respectful debate.”
