How can young people learn that their actions matter? This is exactly where Future Builders comes in. The board game invites young people to discover their own potential to make a difference and shows them how personal and collective decisions can have a positive impact on the environment, society and the economy.
The game was developed by Doruk Karalar, Leah Michelsen and Andréa Cimino Gonzalez Rodrigues, three students on the Master’s degree programme Preneurship for Regenerative Food Systems (PREFS). Their vision is clear: rather than allowing themselves to be paralysed by bleak visions of the future, young people should cultivate hope and play an active role in shaping a future worth living.
Future Builders
A game that turns powerlessness into action
Many young people struggle with concerns about the future and climate change. Future Builders addresses these feelings with a playful approach: participants move through different dimensions of our world, namely the environment, society and the economy, and tackle challenges that reflect real-world decisions.
In doing so, they discover that even small steps can bring about big changes. The game is particularly suited to teachers and social work professionals who wish to support and empower young people. Initial feedback suggests that Future Builders sparks discussion, broadens perspectives and encourages reflection.

“The main aim is to foster a sense of self-efficacy. Participants should experience that even small, everyday actions can make a difference.”
From the idea to implementation
The project team came together through the interdisciplinary PREFS Master’s degree programme, which equips students to tackle complex challenges by applying entrepreneurial thinking and innovative methods. Building on initial experience in game development, the team quickly created an educational project with social relevance.
To continue improving the game, the team actively seeks feedback from educators, social workers and other professionals. This helps to ensure that Future Builders offers genuine added value in day-to-day educational settings over the long term.
Support for sustainable ideas
The project was made possible in part through the ZHAW Sustainable Impact Programme (SIP), which supports students and staff in implementing sustainable projects, including through financial assistance.
