What we measure and make transparent

For several years, the ZHAW has been systematically collecting data on its ecological climate impact across the three fields of energy, mobility and resources, as well as data relating to social sustainability. In line with the principle that “you can only manage what you can measure,” this body of data forms the basis for concrete climate-neutrality measures.

Overview: development of total emissions, 2017–2025

What makes up emissions across the three main categories of energy, mobility and resources? Within the category of energy, emissions are generated by the production of heating and cooling as well as electricity consumption. Within mobility, air travel and car journeys account for a large proportion of emissions, although it has not yet been possible to evaluate all rail travel. In terms of resources, emissions are primarily measured in relation to catering, ICT hardware and paper consumption. As emissions data on waste and commuter travel has only been recorded since 2022, it is not included in the overall summary. These figures can be viewed within the respective sub-areas.

The ZHAW wants to adopt an evidence-based approach when it comes to sustainability. At the same time, improving data quality remains an ongoing process.
