The ZHAW is putting its faith in realistic goals and evidence-based measures as it strives to achieve a sustainable transformation. It collects data in the areas of business mobility (flights, trains and vehicles), commuting (incl. students), resource consumption (catering, paper, ICT, water and waste) and energy consumption within buildings.

“The mandate of a university inevitably generates emissions – there is no getting round that. But that is precisely why we need an honest picture of our carbon footprint: only by understanding where emissions actually arise can we reduce them in a targeted manner and begin the journey towards net zero.”
Although there are still some gaps in the sustainability data, the ZHAW is continually improving its data collection processes. The data is analysed internally by the Life Cycle Assessment Research Group, whereby up-to-date databases and reliable extrapolation techniques are used to project the missing data.
The ZHAW strives to continuously improve data quality and to further develop its sustainability processes and measures.
